Pilton Street #1 – Barnstaple Then & Now

“Before” and “After” – drag the vertical slider left & right to reveal/hide what’s underneath

Pilton Street, given the Then & Now Slider treatment. I was in two minds whether or not to upload this one as it’s not quite right, the church isn’t perfectly lined up, which is really annoying. But I actually really like it regardless, what a beautiful area packed with history.  JP.

Queen Anne’s Walk – Barnstaple Then & Now

“Before” and “After” – drag the vertical slider left & right to reveal/hide what’s underneath

This old photo of Queen Anne’s Walk down on The Strand is one of my favourite old Barnstaple photos. Obviously I couldn’t resist giving it the “Before & After” treatment, and I think it works really well as a Then & Now slider. Hope you like it too!  JP.

Bear Street – Barnstaple Then & Now

“Before” and “After” – drag the vertical slider left & right to reveal/hide what’s underneath

This old photo of a group of people seemingly about to set of on a coach trip works – in my opinion – really well as a “Then & Now” slider. I really like it when there’s vast changes in between the two photographs, but with a chunk of architecture remaining the same in both the Then and the Now. Don’t really get a better example of that than this composite. Even managed to line up the brickwork around the doorway for you. 😉 JP.

Barnstaple Square & Albert Clock – Barnstaple Then & Now

“Before” and “After” – drag the vertical slider left & right to reveal/hide what’s underneath

Another Then & Now slider of Barnstaple Square, but this time with a much older “Before” photo. Quite likely the oldest photograph taken of this part of town, at least the oldest one that I’ve seen, it dates from the mid-late 1860s. Lots of interesting things to pick out, the most noticeable being the building on the very left, demolished shortly after the old photo was taken to make way for the building that now serves as Barnstaple’s museum. I like this one!  JP.

Barnstaple Square – Barnstaple Then & Now

“Before” and “After” – drag the vertical slider left & right to reveal/hide what’s underneath

Barnstaple Square, Then and Now. I really like this one, it’s a cracking old image and works really well as a Before & After composite. Looking from Barnstaple Square up Boutport Street, notice Youings old shopfront, before the building was redesigned in the early 1930s.  JP.

The Strand – Barnstaple Then & Now

Looking down Barnstaple Strand from Queen Anne’s Walk. This one was surprisingly difficult to try and get right as a “Then & Now” slider, this is my best attempt at it so far. Part of me thinks it’s really good and that I’m a complete genius, part of me is highly irritated that it’s still not quite right & thinks I should give it another go. Anyway …. I hope you like it!  JP.

Barnstaple High Street – Northgate – Then & Now

“Before” and “After” – drag the vertical slider left & right to reveal/hide what’s underneath

Not a view that seems to have been photographed that often over the years for some reason, so it’s always nice when a photograph turns up that was taken at this end of the High Street – especially one that’s looking down towards Rolle Quay. The old photo was taken in the 50s, one of the earliest colour photographs of Barnstaple that I’ve come across, I think.  JP.

65 Newport Road – Barnstaple Then & Now

“Before” and “After” – drag the vertical slider left & right to reveal/hide what’s underneath

I’m a complete sucker for a good looking old shopfront, so I was particularly pleased to find this postcard amongst my nan’s photographs. Couldn’t resist looking up whereabouts the photo was taken and cobbling it into a Then & Now. Turns out the lady second from the left was my nan’s sister-in-law, Phyllis Squire, who passed away in 1954 at the age of just 34. 65 Newport Road, Barnstaple – Then & Now   JP.
