Peakes Grocers – Barnstaple Then & Now

“Before” and “After” – drag the vertical slider left & right to reveal/hide what’s underneath

Here’s a Then & Now slider of a long gone family grocers in Barnstaple’s Coronation Street. Always a sucker for an old shop-front, I couldn’t resist turning the old postcard into a Then & Now composition when I saw it pop-up on eBay. If you look closely you’ll see the brickwork matches up exactly in both images when you slide the image backwards & forwards .. not a bad effort considering I borrowed the “Now” image from Google Street View! 🙂 JP.

Barnstaple Strand – Then & Now

“Before” and “After” – drag the vertical slider left & right to reveal/hide what’s underneath

100 years between these two photographs taken down on Barnstaple’s Strand, but with the exception of disappearance of the building nearest to the camera on the right – the old fish market – not really a lot of difference between them at all

Barnstaple High Street – 1881 Blizzard

Fantastic image from 1881, Barnstaple High Street after the region was hit by particularly heavy snow

Central Music Warerooms – Barnstaple Then & Now

84 Barnstaple High Street, Then & Now. They don’t *quite* make shopfronts like they used to, eh?

Pilton Street #2 – Barnstaple Then & Now

“Before” and “After” – drag the vertical slider left & right to reveal/hide what’s underneath

This Then & Now slider of Pilton Street uses the same “now” modern photograph as yesterday’s upload, which you can see here: Pilton Street #1. A few years have passed, we’ve moved onto motorised vehicles and there’s plenty of architectural changes to pick out. Hope you find it interesting.   JP.

Pilton Street #1 – Barnstaple Then & Now

Pilton Street, given the Then & Now Slider treatment. I was in two minds whether or not to upload this one as it’s not quite right, the church isn’t perfectly lined up, which is really annoying. But I actually really like it regardless, what a beautiful area packed with history.  JP.

Looking up Newport Road – Barnstaple Then & Now

“Before” and “After” – drag the vertical slider left & right to reveal/hide what’s underneath

A Then & Now slider looking up Newport Road from the Bottom of Victoria Road. Another one that I really like (but then, I only upload ones that I like, I have deleted scores of attempts at various scenes that didn’t quite make the grade!). The chimney in the old photo belonged to Barnstaple Foundry, also known as Rafarel’s Iron Foundry – you can read more on the history of the foundry at the excellent Graces Guide  JP.

Queen Anne’s Walk – Barnstaple Then & Now

“Before” and “After” – drag the vertical slider left & right to reveal/hide what’s underneath

This old photo of Queen Anne’s Walk down on The Strand is one of my favourite old Barnstaple photos. Obviously I couldn’t resist giving it the “Before & After” treatment, and I think it works really well as a Then & Now slider. Hope you like it too!  JP.

Bear Street – Barnstaple Then & Now

“Before” and “After” – drag the vertical slider left & right to reveal/hide what’s underneath

This old photo of a group of people seemingly about to set of on a coach trip works – in my opinion – really well as a “Then & Now” slider. I really like it when there’s vast changes in between the two photographs, but with a chunk of architecture remaining the same in both the Then and the Now. Don’t really get a better example of that than this composite. Even managed to line up the brickwork around the doorway for you. 😉 JP.
